Unless you want to end up living somewhere unpleasant or possibly even dangerous, you need to think well ahead and do your research when you decided to look for an apartment. You need to have a list of the things you want and do not want out of an apartment right from the get go.
Probably the first thing on your list will be your desired location, and in particular, which area you want to live in. This is critical as it will narrow down your choices very quickly. If there are several neighborhoods to consider that each have a different type of character, then figure out which speaks to you the most. Make a list of these neighborhoods and also look at their surroundings.
Other things you would want to consider are factors like ease of access and closeness to places you frequent. How far away from your place of employment is it and are there all the facilities nearby that you would like, such as malls, cafes, and gyms?
Another critical element is the apartment’s qualities, which should be a priority aspect. Does it have the right number of rooms, does it have a view, is there good neighbors nearby, what are the bathroom and kitchen like, and does it feel secure enough for you?
You should also make sure that you chat to the owner before you sign the lease. You need to talk to them about how much the place is, what the conditions of the lease are, who is in charge of maintenance, and what kind of deposit they will need. A lot of times if someone has just moved out you can negotiate cleaning the apartment in place of a deposit or a reduced deposit.
You should also ask them about what their conditions are for smoking, animals, children, and the number of tenants allowed living in the apartment at any one time. Other questions include whether there are any restrictions on throwing parties or having people over to visit. Where you can park extra cars and can you have anything like a grill outside.
Once all these issues have been resolved, there are a few other factors to consider. Firstly, you need to walk through the apartment with the landlord and take a record of the condition of the apartment before you move all your stuff in..
The best way to do this is to take pictures as well as list each room and everything in it, and then you make a note of the status of each item on the list and each room. At the end of this inspection you should both initial the document, as this will protect you from having to pay for things that you didn’t damage. This gives you a record when you leave in case they do not want to refund your deposit, you can show them items were already in need of repair when you moved in.
